ODE TO BAYO ONANUGA....THE MAN DIED......

Posted: Updated:

Ode to Bayo Onanuga. The man died. Dele Giwa, made me love journalism. I read NEWSWATCH from cover, through Parallax snaps to the Back of the Book. Dan Agbese, Ray Ekpu and Yakubu Mohammed were men I admired. Their prowess with syntax was awesome. NEWSWATCH, was the trailblazer and investigative journalism in Nigeria would never be the same again. Then came the incident on October 19, 1986. Giwa died. Ekpu, Mohammed and Agbese dropped the long spoons and ate TUWO with the Devil. NEWSWATCH, as we knew it died. Giwa's death was not even investigated. Mrs Elekiya Ayiyi Giwa, was left to suffer. Billy Giwa, forgotten. Giwa's trusted friends and people he went to battle with became friends with Ibrahim Babangida. When it was obvious to the world that it was BABA that killed GIWA. If you add NGIDA; you are on your own. Anyway, the Glory departed Israel. Along came Bayo Onanuga, and his African Concord team. Fearless and daring bunch of young journalists. Boldly, they took investigative journalism to a new plateau. Babangida's seat was made hot. The aggressive manner with which they pursued the TRUTH was unprecedented and breathtaking. The Military Junta brought down the Jackboots on them. Their bones would not crunch. African Concord was shut down. Onanuga, Babafemi Ojodu, Kunle Ajibade and Seye Kehinde came back with THENEWS. They began a radicalization process of journalism and were successful. Gani Fawehinmi, loved them. Beko Kuti, and the CLO made use of them to propagate Democracy in Nigeria. Repeated harassment by the Military only emboldened their resolve. With brilliant writers like Yinka Tella, Waziri Adio, Sunday Dare, they kept THE TEMPO on injustice and misrule. They were the voice of the people. The opposition Babangida hated. Compromise with those in Power was not an option. They did not disguise their lack of tolerance for bad people in Power and the Rich that colluded with bad people in power _ like Obasanjo and Abiola. So you can imagine my shock and awe when Onanuga referred to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as 'the godfather'. A god that the Yorubas must allow to lead them. Tinubu, a man that makes Babangida look like Mahatma Ghandi is now Onanuga's godfather. AMAZING! First Reuben Abati became Goodluck's puppet, Ojodu a senator in Government, Kehinde a wealthy publisher of a soft sell magazine. How can aluta continua when these comrades now have their mouths full _ WITH MONEY? Dele Momodu, I have no respect for. The megalomaniac in him gives me nausea and I can't wait to throw up in his face someday. So help me God! But Abati, Onanuga and Ojodu I thought were men with core principles. Decent men with integrity. They fooled me and indeed all Nigerians. A Yoruba proverb goes thus: TI ENIYAN OBATI LOWO LOWO, IWA ONI WA LO MAN WU. Loosely translated it means: YOU DO NOT KNOW A MAN'S REAL CHARACTER UNTIL HE GETS RICH. E tu Brute, Onanuga. This was the unkindest cut of all. Arise O'compatriots. It is finished. ...... The man dies in him who keeps quiet in the face of injustice............. Wole Soyinka. 132420Like · · Promote · Share Jaiyeola Ajasa shared Bayo Onanuga's status. October 19, 2012 As the countdown to the Ondo election begins, those attacking Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for going for Mimiko's jugular, must be either people without an insight into the political understanding between the duo before Mimiko got his stolen mandate back or people without any moral scruples. What we have in Ondo state is a classic case of the betrayer of a godfather by the Ondo governor. And I think he is fully entitled to earn the wages of those who betray the hands that feed them. 1Like · · Promote · Share
